Default Searching for the elusive tone...

What "tone" are you looking for when you are searching for that elusive tone?

I'm not really a tone searcher compared to a lot of other people but I think it would be interesting to hear how you would describe the tone that appeals to you most.

I'm easy in this regard. I would answer the question in a general sense by using the neck pickup or the bridge pickup with the tone dialed back and by playing more in the vicinity of the 12th fret than in the vicinity of the 1st fret.

I'm usually playing slightly off clean so a little crunch when I play louder and fairly clean when I turn the volume down.

What is your basic tone?

Acoustic-like with a tiny bit of crunch. I use a fast little echo or reverb mixed with the clean to get an acoustic-like resonance.

I like the warm bluesy sound with delay. Delay is usually the only pedal I use besides my Ditto Looper.

My basic tone is, clean, with just a bit of dirt and 'verb. Normally on the neck and middle pickups on my strats. With some compression. I like a tight bottom (that's what she said), and not too jangly mids and treble, and articulation across all strings. When I dig in, I like how the sound will distort more, without losing articulation. But that's a real generic description. I like SRV's "big sound," while liking his tone on Lenny. I like Carleton's tone too. And Knopfler's.

Describing tone, is like describing colors. You may get in the ballpark, but 2 people describing similar tones, could be standing in entirely different ballparks.

Fun fact: colors aren't perceived the same across all cultures.

Define 'perceived' in this circumstance?

Somewhere between Satch and Petrucci for lead. Gilmour for rhythm.

How I describe human perception in all things: how we define, describe, and categorize anything, and why I say human perception can be the most unreliable source for "facts."

But getting back to color, you can't have a discussion about color with someone who has no concept of it. https://www.sapiens.org/language/color-perception/

Under the rules of linguistics, if a word doesn't exist in a language, that "thing" doesn't exist at all. Being bilingual, I can tell you, some things simply don't translate very well, if at all.

Put an entirely different way: can you have a discussion about color with a blind person? Can you talk about tone, with a deaf person? This leads to the philosophical discussion of existence: do things exist, if we're not here to perceive it? If two different groups perceive the same object differently, is there a right and wrong?

OK now your making my brain hurt! lol

I would say, all things exist 'as is', but individual reality varies with perception, how or if we can perceive or even imagine them.

I guess no one knows WHAT each color looks like to each, you may see red as what I see as yellow. Our eyes send a train of neural pulses to the brain, what 'it' does with it we have no way to know between each person. Same with taste, what 'is' salty? what 'is' sweet?

Are we even having the same conversation? Am I in the matrix? ...

If you guys can't agree on what red looks like how will you ever agree on tone or tone woods for that matter?

Yes, you are in the matrix. Enjoy your stay.

Hat?
