I think a MIDI keyboard via usb doesn't need to go thro3an audio interface. I just plug mine straight to my computer via usb.

You can use a DAW without an interface but it's hard if you're doing any playing where you have to track to something you've already recorded etc.

Audio interfaces with low latency can be pretty cheap especially used.

I don't get it. What do you mean?

Do you mean because of latency there will be delay whilst playing?

The answer is yes. The midi controller triggers virtual instruments; it's not audio all by itself.

If you want to record external instruments, that is when you'll need an interface. They are not dependent on each other for use.

Latency and delay are describing the same thing.

If I hit the virtual keyboard and it takes over 10ms before I hear it I will not be able to play along with another track and barely able to play alone.

You need to get it down to 4-5 ms latency to have a usable setup.
