Default Soft drink tax...

I know that soft drinks aren't good for you but I don't smoke, rarely drink alcohol, and don't drink coffee and drink soft drinks a little at a time (but I hate diet drinks).

Seattle just started taxing soft drinks. I think it's 1.7 cents an ounce. It doesn't sound like much but it comes close to doubling the price of soft drinks at the grocery store.

It's ridiculous when the tax for a product is almost as much as the product itself.

It's also just a city tax so some people will just drive outside the city to buy soft drinks. For me the gas would be as much as the tax so I won't be doing that.

If any of you drink soft drinks, do you have such a tax in your city?

We no longer have plastic bags in the grocery store. We have to bring our own bags. They now have to charge 5 cents if you want a paper bag.

They still have plastic bags in the produce and meat sections, just no plastic full size grocery bags. I'm OK with that and everyone quickly just got used to bringing those reusable grocery bags (which they also sell).

The soft drink tax is just excessive. I just heard that it is the highest in the country.

Ya'll just keep voting for those Democrats and you won't have anything left but a pay stubb that shows you how much you were supposed to have made before they took it all.

Didn't you hear how Agent Orange brought back mining?

Mikey Bloomberg tried to ban super-sized drinks in stores- it was called the "Fat Tax." Don't recall if taxes went up on soft drinks, but the super-size drinks law was ultimately overturned.

Tax on cigarettes is about $6/pack.

I can see these taxes from a different standpoint: sugar leads to obesity, and other health risks, which costs the country in healthcare, sick days, early death, etc.

Smoking speaks for itself, not to mention the obnoxious smokers that blow smoke in peoples' faces just to be assholes. We've gotten used to smoke free establishments.

Plastic isn't good for the environment.

The price of cigarettes helped people quit.

I doubt we can legislate morality, any more than we can tax people into good health.

I'm libertarian on most everything. But when you live in the most taxed city in the country, you get fed up with paying more, for everything.

We're gonna get taxed on something, somewhere. I'll suck it up, on things that cause health risks. About 37% of our population is obese.

As anyone thought about the health issues related to everyone reusing bags that carry food? I watch people leave the bathroom without washing their hands, so I'm positive the stores are filled with a collection of veritable petrie dishes disguised as grocery bags.

A soft drink tax is just another government money grab. Zero F*#&s were give about anyone's health.
