Default Amadd9

What is the easiest way to play an Amadd9 chord?

I'm going to assume you just want to add the 9 and leave the b7 out. I would just play an Am barre chord at the 5th fret and add the B note with my little finger. When I see add 9, the first thing I try is the 9 chord. If it sounds crappy, then I do it their way.

I just looked at the Chord A Day thing and musically it is correct but when you put those close harmonies that close together, it drives my ear nuts. If I have to play close harmonies, I try to put them an octave apart. That B and C right up against each other would drive me up the wall. However, the writer might want that super close harmony voicing and you just have to do it their way in order to get the sound they want.

I play it the way PK described, and agree that generally, you don't want intervals so close.

I play that shape quite often. Sounds good with open strings.

Easiest way is this: x-0-7-5-0-0. The top 4 strings alone is Amadd9, so you don't need the 5th string.

Or you can put the 9th on top like this: x-0-7-5-5-7. Again, the 5th string is not needed (so this makes a good movable m(add9) shape).

An alternative method for the same voicing BallisticSquid posted is x-0-2-4-1-0. (R-5-9-3-5). No easier, but not any trickier either.

A movable version with the nice 9-b3 dissonance would be 5-7-9-5-5-5 (top 2 strings not needed).

Indeed they might. The hook of this song depends on an Emadd9 chord with the F# right next to the G (0:37, and on the title phrase after that):

And an Amadd9 sounds rather nice fingerpicked (IMO):
