Very nice of you Fill.

That's a nice looking guitar you are getting. This weekend should be interesting with you putting in those pups, I know I could not do it.

Here is my P90 guitar. Glad I have it and it's paid for!

Thank you, Coblat, and BTW... YOW!!!
Thats a NICE guitar!! Ill bet it honks its ass off with those P90's in a hollow guitar. I like the color too. Natural maple has always been attractive as far as Im concerned.

BTW, Slim, I DO like the color of the LP you're gonna put together. Nothing wrong with that yellow color at all, IMO.

Research is good. It somehow makes $ fly outta my wallet though.

Well, it's not a "build" per se, just a pup swap. Very nice pups, I anticipate.

I do have a guitar coming thats *supposed* (see below) to be delivered today, so hopefully its a good player, and then it goes in the "lab" to see what it does or doesnt need to be a great guitar.
Probably just gonna be a pickup and cap swap, assuming it has good pots, bridge and tuners, BUT... one never know, do one??

(Red faced rant alert: )
*Friggin' UPS, man. That guitar was supposed to be delivered yesterday (Thursday). It departed UPS in Minneapolis on the 8th (Monday) at 11:20pm. It arrived in the UPS Jacksonville hub on Wednesday the 10th at 4:45pm.

The following BULLSHIT has happened since then:

1/11--6:04am: Departs Jacksonville.

1/11--6:17am: Arrives back in Jacksonville.

1/11--3:53pm: Departs Jacksonville .

1/11--4:08pm: Arrives back in Jacksonville.

1/11--8:10pm: Departs Jacksonville.

1/11--9:03pm: Arrives in St. Augustine.

From 9:03pm till Im typing this?? Tracking shows nothing.
Weird thing about UPS in my experience- when it hits my county, I know it's gonna be a looong day, but they normally deliver on the expected date.

I think I ordered my guitar Monday? Tuesday at the latest, and paid about $5 for expedited shipping (3-5 days) from Kansas. I was trying to time your pups, and the guitar together. I ordered from Musician's Friend, and they ship from Kansas. I bought my new Strat from them, paid $10 for 2-day shipping, and it actually got here in 2 days.

Um...my guitar was delivered at 12 noon today. I'm not home now, but my son was, and it's definitely there.

Speaking of deliveries- I ordered a new (refurbished) cell phone from Amazon yesterday, Same Day Delivery. But I tried cancelling the order within an hour and half of ordering it, because I got my screen cracked cell to this place on Canal St, and the guy worked magic on it. Works better than ever. Anyway, I got the new phone, which I've decided to keep. The files I ordered from Amazon arrived today.

I HATE waiting for an anticipated guitar, and those shipping updates look totally whacked. I think you gave me all your luck Fill!

Don't worry, it'll get there.

Yeah, it's so different- and people think the orange Gretsch is weird- it's got a real oddball appeal to me. MF is known to take really lousy pics, but I'll know for sure by tonight.

Strangely, my first pup swap was the most complicated- hollow body, 5 knobs, switch, output jack. It took an hour. Every other pups swap took me hours (a shit soldering iron will do that).

I'm not gonna say, "if I can do it, anyone can (I hate when people say that)," but I'll say the fear of doing something is often what gets in the way. I DREADED doing the Gretsch pup swap, but I resented paying someone $200 to do it even more.

I didn't know that had p-90s. What did I tell you about chasing tone?

Now, how do I install the pups Fill gave me, is gonna be my question right now. I've been pretty busy today, and looked up a schematic from Rio Grande for a one tone, on volume, 2 pup diagram: http://riograndepickups.com/images/w...l_Tele_LRG.pdf I know this is for a telly, but it's the closest for 2 single coils, one tone, one volume, 3-way switching.

I know white is hot and will go to the proper lug on the switch- ideally, that'll be clear to me when I open the guitar up.

Black/ground goes to tone/volume. Pretty straight forward, I think.

Guess Fill can best answer this (this'll take your mind offa waiting for your git, and it'll arrive by the time you read this)- it wasn't clear to me where the ground is. Should I just strip the outer sheathing- the pics I took aren't very clear, but it looks like 2 wires within the silver sheathing.

I'll just gently strip the outer sheathing tonight. I tend not to rush these things, and like Dan, I can be pretty OCD, and I'm not the best solderer in the world.

If possible, I'll do what- was it strathummer? I'll simply snip the soldered wires somewhere in the middle, and ideally, be able to join the proper wires, then use shrink tubing to keep things together. I'll test the pups with the screwdriver tap test before doing anything final.

This has been a long day. I felt like killing a coupla co-workers. This may surprise some, but I hate to scream and shout at work, and really try to work out compromises, but I pretty much lost my shit today, and walked out on a meeting. When I get to THAT point, everyone, including those above me, gives me a wide berth, and leaves me the fuck alone.

Those Rio's have the same wire as Gibson... a simple single hot output wire surrounded by the braid (ground). The one difference is that they seem to have some sort of clear plastic coating or cover over the braid... just gently cut away enough of that covering off braid to be able to solder the braid.

This diagram is closer to your guitar:

A couple of things... one side of the 3 way switch has a single heavy lug. That gets grounded. The opposite side of the 3 way has 4 thinner lugs. Push the two in the center together, and run the hot wire from the volume pot thru those two lugs, and solder the wire and lugs together. The outer two thin lugs get soldered to their respective pickups hot wire.

Here's a great trick. Get one of these loop terminals with a loop large enough to put the threaded portion of the 3 way switch thru it. Ace Hardware usually has a good selection of these:

The loop terminal will act as a "washer" between the 3 way and the guitar control cavity. If it has one of those insulators on the wire barrel (yellow in this pic), pull it off. Bend the wire barrel up 90 degrees. If the barrel of the terminal loop is not big enough to accommodate the two braided wires from the pickups, and one small thin wire that you'll solder to ground, simply spread the barrel open with a small screwdriver till it IS big enough.

Now, you've got a real easy place to run the pickup ground braid thru, and a very short distance for the hot wires from the pickups to go to their terminals on the 3 way switch. Since you'll be grounding the small black wire, the terminal loop will serve as a ground for the pickup braided shield AND the switch.

It should look like this when its done. The small black wire gets soldered to any grounded point, and as an added bonus, since you're using the loop as a grounding "buss", you wont need to ground the thicker terminal on the 3 way switch. The entire switch frame will be grounded by the loop:

(I just laid this together to take the pics... it obviously should be done neater when its used in a guitars circuit).

I hope you got your guitar Fill! Haven't searched the forum yet.

Thanks. I'll have to get to a computer to see how that sinks in.

I was hoping to knit the already soldered wires to the pups you gave me. I'm gonna test the stock pups a bit, then decide whether I'm getting new pots, etc. I just got home. I wanna look inside the body cavity, then get my ducks in order.

Here she is!

Ha! Standby, there's gonna be an unpacking vid I'm uploading now.

I spent a few minutes with it, and it sounds pretty damn awesome, stock. I have no idea what the output is rated at, but Fill's pups are probably the hottest of all my guitars.

I tried it clean, and it can sound jazzy and warm on the neck (with the tone dialed down), and can dirty up with some harder picking. I prefer the bridge pup (typical of me, since I tend towards the treble frequencies), and I get that p-90- what I call the compressed tone; very unlike Fender single coils for sure, but with the tone wide open, I can get some near chicken picking tones.

Then I put it through a compressor, and it gave the pups that bit of punch I like. I added some slight OD with my Mojo mojo pedal, and it sounds damn good- I can definitely see why so many people say it's the best cheap guitar you can buy (it'll still take a lot to get me away from Fenders though).

Oh, the short scale definitely feels different for me. I haven't played in a while, but I can see doing bent string vibrato better. The fretboard itself feels kind of raw, like unsanded wood or something- it's in my head; my new strat's neck feels the same.

I have to go and look at the specs again. I think it's a 12" radius neck. Ah, vid is done.

Now, people have to guess what it cost. I think everyone knows what it is by now.

Edit: drive vid deleted to save space. YT unpacking vid below.

I'll upload to YT for those that can't view the google drive vid. I'm dealing with a freaking abscessed gum right now...shit, what a hellish day, but a NGD always makes things better.
